Two New Legends PvP Characters in Sons of Trigon!

Sons of Trigon brings new and fearsome characters to Legends PvP, Cheetah and Donna Troy. Earlier in the process of creating DLC 8, we were able to sit down behind the scenes with two of DCUO’s Systems Designers working on the characters. Read on to learn more about what you can expect to see from these two femme fatales.

CHEETAH, with Systems Designer David “Crafty Crafter” Stricker

Q: Tell us who you are and which Legends character you worked on for Sons of Trigon.

A: I’m David Stricker (aka Crafty Crafter), I’m a Game Designer, and I worked on Cheetah.

Q: Who is Cheetah? How did you use her character as inspiration when creating her powers?

A: Cheetah in our universe is Barbara Ann Minerva, a former archaeologist who gained the powers of the Cheetah by sacrificing one of her teammates while on an expedition to a Temple of Urzkartaga in Africa. Cheetah’s origin and past played a big part in inspiring her powers in DC Universe Online. Two of her abilities, Curse of Urzkartaga and Blood Sacrifice, are obviously inspired by her story. Her other abilities are very feral in nature, and are intended to help the character feel like the godly embodiment of the cheetah.

Q: Every Legends character brings new styles and tactics to Legends PvP. What does Cheetah bring to the table? What is different about her?

A: The most obvious and largest thing Cheetah brings to Legends PvP is that she is our first speedster character. Cheetah also brings an exciting playstyle to the game in that she is a glass cannon, with a kill-or-be-killed set of abilities that allow her to inflict massive damage to her prey, but offer little in the way of evasion or defense. She has a unique innate berserking ability that increases all of her damage output while she is under 35% health, making her all the more fearsome.

Q: If you had to pick one of Cheetah’s powers as your favorite, which would it be? Why?

A: This is a tough one for me, because so many of her abilities have great functionality and great animations and FX that make her fun to play and impressive to watch. My favorite is probably her sixth tray ability, Blood Sacrifice. This is an execute move (deals additional damage when the target is under 35% health) with a long cast time that deals massive damage, and if you knock out a player with it, Cheetah will have substantial health and power restored to her. It’s tricky to use since it makes Cheetah very vulnerable, but if you time it well with a block, counter-attack, or knockdown, it can swing the tide of the battle in your favor.

Q: Who would win in a fight, Cheetah or Donna Troy?

A: Cheetah, obviously. Donna can’t even keep ahold of her golden lasso when Cheetah is around.

DONNA TROY, with Systems Designer Andrew Buschmann

Q: Tell us who you are and which Legends character you worked on for Sons of Trigon.

A: Hi, I am Andrew Buschmann, Systems Designer.  I created Donna Troy for our eighth DLC Pack.

Q: Who is Donna Troy? How did you use her character as inspiration when creating her powers?

A: Donna Troy is an Amazon Warrior, possessing incredible strength and wielding gifts from the Gods themselves. I used these gifts as inspiration for her powers. One gift, from Panacea, allows Donna to accelerate her healing over time. Another example is the gift of Rhea’s Girdle, which provides a shield to protect Donna from attackers. These gifts combined with the iconic Amazonian Lasso make her a formidable opponent.

Q: Every Legends character brings new styles and tactics to Legends PvP. What does Donna Troy bring to the table? What is different about her?

A: Donna will bring a very resilient playstyle to Legends. We have many characters focused on dealing damage, and Donna can dish out plenty of that, but she has two very powerful defensive maneuvers that set her apart from the rest. Donna has the first heal in all of legends in the form of Panacea’s Gift. In the right hands, this character will be extremely difficult to defeat.

Q: If you had to pick one of Donna Troy’s powers as your favorite, which would it be? Why?

A: Far and away my favorite power of Donna Troy’s is her Lasso of Persuasion. This is a standard lasso pull which brings her opponent to her, but with a twist. After pulling the target, Donna is able to perform a powerful high kick that launches her target into the air by holding melee attack. Landing this has become a personal obsession of mine during internal playtests. I find pulling and kicking my fellow designers into the air infinitely enjoyable.

Q: Who would win in a fight, Cheetah or Donna Troy?

A: On the surface this appears to be a pretty even matchup. In reality I think that Donna Troy has a major advantage against Cheetah because of her defensive nature. In the right hands, Donna is one of our most survivable characters to date. She uses some iconic abilities like Panacea’s Gift (accelerated healing) and a lasso pull combo to remain alive as long as possible, while dishing out some serious damage.  On the other hand, Cheetah is one of our more burst-y DPS characters. She deals massive damage but isn’t nearly as survivable. In most fights, I think Donna would win.
